ANGE POSTECOGLOU has no issue with Jota or Cameron Carter-Vickers pursuing their careers away from Celtic at the end of the season – so long as they are fully focussed on the here and now.
Celtic are keen to give both players a decision to make at the end of the season as they look to convert loan contracts into permanent deals.
Jota and Carter-Vickers have both been integral to Postecoglou’s side this term but the reality is that there may well be more financially lucrative offers on the table at the end of the season from outwith Celtic.
Postecoglou is well aware of the finances that underpin Scottish football but has cautioned that not only does he look for players whose heart is with the club but who also appreciate a winning culture.
“This is a two-way thing,” said the Greek-Australian. “The players have to want to be here and we have to want them here. When you have that thinking, I'm sure we will get a deal done. There's no issue if players see their future away from here or have different motivations.
"The appeal to come to this club is playing in front of 60,000 people every second week, competing in Europe, competing for trophies and playing for a club that's universally known around the world. That's the attraction.
"If we are playing Champions League next year and, if not next year, it should be our goal every year then it will be an attraction for players to stay but will also be an attraction for players to come. It doesn't really change the situation.
"Both Cameron and Jota are saying all they need to say to me with their performances. They have been outstanding contributors all year and a great young men as well and I am loving having them as part of his football club.
“That's fine [if they can earn more money]. I would never deny that. We could get offers for some of our other players, depending on how we finish the season. That's the choices they make. There's no problem. If that's what they desire for their next move, I have no issue with them, but while you are here with me, you give everything you can to this football club to make it successful and if you do that then whatever your next step is I am happy for you."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
