GIOVANNI van Bronckhorst isn’t looking for wholesale changes from Rangers’ last meeting with Celtic.

The Rangers boss watched his side storm into a third minute lead before toiling to a 2-1 deficit at half-time, but come full-time he was reflecting on the fine margins that cost the Ibrox side.

This time round – with a spot in the Scottish Cup final against Hearts up for grabs – Van Bronckhorst is looking for significant improvement in both boxes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a change in personnel or methods at Hampden.

Quizzed on what his side must do differently this afternoon, Van Bronckhorst explained: “Of course, you want to cut out mistakes in games.

“The game we had a couple of weeks ago we started really well but by the end of the first half we had already conceded two goals.

“We have to defend better as a team and make sure we don’t concede goals.

“The second half we were pushing for an equaliser and had a lot of chances that we created in their box. “We have to be more clinical and have a good display for over 90 minutes or longer if needed.

“It’s a big game so it needs big performances. Top games are always close and we have to make sure we are winning this tie to go to the final.”

The Rangers boss has had just two days with his players since the extra-time triumph over Braga on Europa League duty to prepare to take on rivals Celtic. However, he’s confident another special night in Europe can propel Rangers to the Scottish Cup final as he revealed there are no new injury concerns.

“The impact is that we are through to the semi-finals in Europe,” said Van Bronckhorst of his side’s European success. “We had a great night on Thursday and it gives us a lot of positive momentum. I think that’s very good going into the game tomorrow.

“We don’t have any injury doubts. We have everyone available so we are happy with the squad.

“It was a tough and demanding game physically, but we have enough time to recover from that.”

Long-term absentees Alfredo Morelos, Ianis Hagi and Filip Helander are the only players sidelined for this afternoon’s Cup clash – and while some may have played if fit, Van Brocnkhorst still has plenty of options.

One team selection call which will come under major focus this afternoon will be in midfield where Van Bronckhorst has been questioned over his use of Aaron Ramsey and Steven Davis in particular.

The Wales international – who joined on loan from Juventus in January – is starting to cement his spot in midfield after a stop-start beginning to life in Glasgow.

“It’s always good to have headaches about players to pick because it means you have a good squad and options,” said Van Bronckhorst in response to a query over Ramsey’s recent contribution.

“Aaron has played the most since he came in the last couple of weeks.

“He had some setbacks in the beginning but he’s played a lot. He’s the best he’s been physically since he came.

“We will help him and keep him fresh for the games ahead. I’m really happy with his performances and availability.”

While it’ll be in the hours before kick-off when Van Bronkhorst’s midfield master-plan is unveiled, it’s almost certain Connor Goldson and James Tavernier will keep their spots in defence.

Captain Tavernier has been in blistering form with 14 goals and 16 assists this term, defensive colleague Goldson has been ever-present  and is expected to be integral this afternoon if Rangers are to advance.

The duo have been similarly impressive for Rangers, but differ in their futures with Goldson’s contract at Ibrox to expire in the summer, while Tavernier is tied down for another two years.

Despite major questions marks lingering over Goldson’s future after the summer, Van Brocnkhorst has never been in doubt over playing the commanding defender.

“I’ve never experienced in my coaching career when a player is out of contract that it affects them,” said Van Bronckhorst. “It’s a circumstance that’s happening a lot. Connor is handling it really well.

“He’s performing well and it doesn’t have a negative influence on him and it definitely hasn’t had a negative influence on me.

“It’s just the way it is in football where you have to perform no matter what. Especially in a club the size of Rangers. He’s been doing that and winning games to bring success to this club.”

And on Tavernier, Van Bronckhorst was highly complimentary as he joked over his contrasting goalscoring record as a full-back.

He said: “Well, those numbers are not common for a full-back. I didn’t have those numbers.

“It shows the quality he has with his drive pushing forward and with his assists.

“He has created many over the years and also scored goals so that’s really a good thing to have for the team.

“He’s been doing really well. I’m happy with him and happy for the team with his contribution.

“He just needs to keep going and try to make crosses and goals whenever he can.

“I’m really happy with his performances.”
