SCOTT MCDONALD has weighed in on the debate over Celtic or Rangers enjoying the better season, but warned next season will be close.
The former Celtic striker insisted his old club enjoyed the more successful season winning both the Scottish Premiership title and Premier Sports Cup.
However, he was quick to insist his opinion does not mean he reckons Giovanni van Bronckhorst has done a poor job at Rangers so far.
The Dutchman took the Ibrox club to the Europa League final but fell short against Eintracht Frankfurt. However he clinched the Scottish Cup trophy with an extra-time win over Hearts at Hampden.
Giving his take on which side had the better season, McDonald told Go Radio: "Celtic had the better season. They won two trophies, Rangers won one.
"They’re into the Champions League and get that money, Rangers still have to do that."
However, McDonald then offered a warning that this season is set up to be a tight contest between the Glasgow rivals.
And he predicted neither side will drop many points leaving the derby matches as a major factor in the title race with Van Bronckhorst "more than capable" of challenging Ange Postecoglou's side.
McDonald explained: "It's good for Scottish football though, with the success both teams have had. Rangers in Europa has been great and promoting Scottish football and getting coefficient points up there.
"People will say I'm biased and it's not to say Giovanni hasn't done an excellent job as well.
"It's neck and neck at the moment. When Celtic beat Rangers in that first game when van Bronckhorst took over, you're asking if he's got the answers to Celtic and come back.
"He was outthought in the game and he's come back and shown he's more than capable from a tactical perspective to challenge Celtic.
"It was neck and neck out with that game, there wasn't many points dropped and I think it's going to be tight next season and exciting to watch."
