BELGIAN midfielder Tom Pietermaat has opted to sign for a homeland third tier club after revealing he'd become frustrated waiting for St Mirren to make him an offer.

The Saints are set to sign Australian star Ryan Strain from Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa as manager Stephen Robinson continues his rebuilding process with the Paisley club.

They were strongly linked with a move for Beerschot holding midfielder Pietermaat after he left the Antwerp side after playing the season in the top flight with former Dundee United and Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland.

However, he's now opted to sign a three-year deal with Limburg outfit Patro Eisden instead in the third tier of football in his country.

He explained: "I've waited a long time for an opportunity in Scotland. But I couldn't wait any longer.

"With Patro Eisden I am opting for a great project that will also give me certainty in the coming years. I will join an ambitious club and I will be able to continue training as a professional."

St Mirren have already snapped up Mark O'Hara, Trevor Carson, Keanu Baccus and Jonah Ayunga so far this summer and will soon confirm former Aston Villa star Strain.
