THE Scottish Professional Football League have announced record financial results - with a backroom shuffle also confirmed.
The governing body this morning confirmed a record turnover and payment to clubs as well as an increase in prize money and TV fees from the Premier Sports Cup.
The statement revealed a turnover of £39.5million (39,523,000) which is up seven per cent from the previous figure of £36.7m (36,784,000).
Accounts also showed payments to clubs are up five per cent from £28.3m (28,358,000) to £29.7m (29,717,000).
The SPFL went on to confirm additional payments of £2.7m (2,787,000) were paid to clubs from the Premier Sports Cup.
The announcement also revealed a change in position for Callum Beattie who is moving from the position of Company Secretary to the newly created Chief Operating Officer role reporting to Neil Doncaster.
SPFL cheif executive Doncaster, said: “These record results are extremely encouraging for our game and reflect the positive impact of the cinch title sponsorship, the largest single sponsorship deal in the history of the league, and the ongoing support that we continue to enjoy from Sky Sports and our other broadcast partners.
“It’s also important to recognise the outstanding commitment of our small team at the SPFL, which works tirelessly on behalf of our 42 member clubs, and deserves huge credit for the way league operations continued through the pandemic.
“With two of our clubs in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since Season 2007/08, and on the back of our recently-announced long-term contract with Sky Sports, the SPFL can look forward with real confidence to the years ahead.”
Chairman Murdoch MacLennan added: “It’s to the enormous credit of Neil and his management team that they have delivered the strongest set of financial results in the 132- year history of the league.
"These results, of course, reflect the resilience and performance of the 42 member clubs of the SPFL - and their hugely committed fans - in ensuring that the SPFL remains the most dramatic, passionate, and exciting league in European football.”
And Beattie, who has been the SPFL’s Company Secretary for the past two years, said: “The recent work of the SPFL’s Strategy Group has been the catalyst for a range of initiatives across the commercial and operational sides of the business.
“There is a host of positive and exciting opportunities in the pipeline and I’m looking forward to assisting the Chief Executive in delivering these in my new role.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
