JORDAN HENDERSON reckons Liverpool took a step in the right direction with a commanding Champions League victory over Rangers.
The Reds ran out 2-0 winners at Anfield as a Mohamed Salah penalty followed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s spectacular early free-kick.
Liverpool went into the Group A clash on the back of a damaging draw with Brighton and Hove Albion as they conceded further ground in the Premier League title race.
This was an impressive showing, though, and the margin of victory should have been even more emphatic as keeper Allan McGregor pulled off a string of superb stops.
Rangers were outplayed and outclassed throughout at Anfield but this could prove to be an important foundation for the future for Liverpool as boss Jurgen Klopp turns his attentions to the trip to Arsenal this weekend.
Henderson said: “I felt good out there. I felt we played some really good stuff with the change in formation.
“The intensity levels were there. Overall we have to be happy with the performance.
“It’s not easy to stay focused with everything that goes on in the outside world. It can hurt players at time.
“But you have to try and find a way to use that as fuel and energy to prove people wrong. That’s what I’ve learned the older I’ve got.
“The first half felt good, intensity, energy, winning the ball back high up. Winning tackles and getting the ball.
“Overall, we have to be really pleased and it’s a step in the right direction.
“We focused on what we needed to do. We had an idea they might play five at the back.
“Whether it’s four or five, you have to try and adapt a little bit to the situation in the game, but we want to press with intensity.
“I felt we picked and chose the right moments to press today. We went and got the ball back which is important.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
