CHELSEA youngster Billy Gilmour was handed his first start for the club by Frank Lampard on Wednesday night and the Scot left the home crowd purring after a sensational display.

The ex-Rangers prospect ran the game in the middle of the park - finishing the match with a passing accuracy of 93% - as Chelsea cantered to a 7-1 win over Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

Among Gilmour's admirers was Monaco midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who said that the 18-year-old was a class above at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas tweeted: "He played amazing tonight. Personality is the most important at this age and he’s got it all right.

"Now time to keep learning and taking advantage of these games to prove the coach he’s good enough."

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was equally impressed with Gilmour's performance in his first-ever start at senior level, stating: "I thought Billy Gilmour ran the game from midfield."
