CALLUM PATERSON found the net for the first time since recovering from a devastating ankle injury - before admitting it was a shank.

The Scotland internationalist climbed from the bench on Wednesday night to notch the final goal in Cardiff’s 3-0 dismantling of Mark Warburton’s QPR.

It was a memorable moment for the former Hearts ace, who missed the final three months of last season after sustaining ligament damage during Scotland’s 2-0 win against San Marino in March and was helpless to aid the Bluebirds’ doomed battle against relegation.

Nevertheless, he revealed the strike wasn’t quite as sweet a volley as it first appeared.

Paterson said: “It was a bit of a shank!

“I didn’t think anyone had seen that. I hoped everyone had only seen it go into the top corner and we could leave it at that.

“But it went in and thankfully that’s my first goal of the season. Hopefully, I can get a few more now.”
