How the Rangers players rated in their 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in the Europa League.
ALLAN McGREGOR: Harsh night for the goalkeeper who had very little to do beyond both Young Boys goals. Could do little about the first one from close range, and then unable to keep out the winner from Christian Fassnacht despite a despairing dive 6
JAMES TAVERNIER: Two errors from the captain cost his team badly. Carelessly caught in possession to allow Young Boys to equalise early in the second half, before a misjudgment of a long ball forward in injury time led to the winner. Also booked. A night to forget 4
CONNOR GOLDSON: Caught static at the first scoring chance of the game and would have been grateful to see Jean Pierre-Nsame scuff his shot past the post. Could do little to prevent the cross coming in for the equaliser and caught on his heels at the winning goal 6
FILIP HELANDER: A surprise starter in defence ahead of Nikola Katic, especially given his struggles on the plastic pitch at Livingston the previous week. Conceded the first and then second goals of his Rangers career but otherwise put in a solid performance 6

BORNA BARISIC: Now nailed down as the first-choice left-back, the Croat claimed an assist as Rangers forged in front late in the first half. Got a bloody nose minutes earlier after misjudging a bouncing ball that skidded off the plastic pitch, and then in the wars again late in the match 7
RYAN JACK: Dogged and tenacious as ever in midfield and took the chance to get forward whenever he could. Hobbled off injured just beyond the hour mark, something that would have concerned both Steven Gerrard and Scotland boss Steve Clarke 6
STEVEN DAVIS: Kept play ticking over whenever in possession while also trying to stem the flow of Swiss attacks whenever Rangers didn’t have the ball. Still a vital performer for Rangers in Europe even at the age of 34. Rarely gave the ball away 6
GLEN KAMARA: Brought back into the team at the expense of Greg Stewart to try to provide Rangers with greater defensive presence. Did the dirty stuff diligently, especially after Jack went off injured 6
SHEYI OJO: Asked to provide an attacking out ball wide on the left but struggled to retain possession on the few occasions Rangers managed to get forward. Didn’t do enough defensively either on a disappointing night 5
ALFREDO MORELOS: Had missed a half-chance moments earlier but was never going to pass up a second as he put his side in front with a vital goal. Should have had a penalty in the second half and then only a great save denied him again 8
SCOTT ARFIELD: Stationed wide on the right but asked to do most of his work in a defensive shift with Young Boys eager to raid down the wing at every opportunity. Didn’t do much in an attacking sense but put in a shift 6
Substitute:
GREG STEWART (for Jack): Man of the match against Aberdeen thrust on following Jack’s injury. Had the ball in the net but flagged offside 5
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
