Steph Twell just missed out on following up her Scottish cross-country victory at the Vitality Big Half in London on Sunday.

The Scot, 29, held a commanding lead for much of the 13-mile race but was caught by defending champion Charlotte Purdue in the closing stages and eventually finished 55 seconds behind the Englishwoman who took victory in 70 minutes and 38 seconds.

Mo Farah shook off stomach cramp to make it back-to-back victories in the men’s race with a late kick taking him clear of training partner Bashir Abdi to win in 61:14.

“The conditions weren’t great today so I’m pleased to win, although it would have been nice to run a bit faster and really test myself,” he said. “I’m happy with the win and with how my preparations are going ahead of the London Marathon in April.”

Meanwhile, Mhairi Maclennan is set for a spot in the British team for this month’s world cross-country championships after coming third at the trials in Loughborough.

The 2018 Scottish champion narrowly missed out on automatic selection by coming in the top two, but is all but certain to land a ticket to Aarhus when the squad is revealed on Wednesday.

Luke Traynor could get a place in the senior men’s line-up after coming sixth, but Scottish champion Adam Craig could finish only tenth. Eloise Walker’s fourth place in the junior women’s race, though, should land her a global bow.
