BRITISH bantamweight champion Kash Farooq would welcome an all-Scots super fight with Lee McGregor – but only if the price was right.

The Glaswegian successfully defended his title for the second time last night by stopping previously undefeated English champion Kyle Williams in the fifth round.

A third defence would see Farooq retain the Lonsdale belt for good and many boxing fans would like to see that happen against Commonwealth champion McGregor.

The Edinburgh fighter praised Farooq for his polished performance against Williams and called out the Pakistan-born boxer to take him on in what he described as a “fight of the year contender”.

Farooq’s trainer Craig Dickson insists his man wouldn’t shy away from that as long as the promoters make it worth his while.

Dickson said: “We want the McGregor fight as it would be a cracking contest. If Kash wins that one it would take him to another level again. And he would be ready for that fight.

“But it would be need to be an unbelievable offer. When it comes to a possible McGregor fight I’ll be putting my business head on. If people want it to happen then how much is it worth?

“Kash wants titles, of course, but a lot of why he is doing this is about looking after his family. So anyone looking to put on that fight would need to make it worth his time.

“They’re both undefeated fighters and really talented boys. And whoever loses will be knocked down a peg. So there would be a lot at stake for both of them. McGregor hasn’t fought since October so we’ll need to see what his camp wants to do. But we’ll be ready if it happens.”

McGregor is eager to make the much-anticipated fight happen. “Let’s not mess about here. Scotland could potentially have a huge night and fight of the year contender this year. I’m willing to fight Kash in my next fight and that’s the fight I want.

“These are the nights I’ve dreamed about as a kid. I went through the amateur ranks with this kid and what an honour it would be to share the ring with him on such a huge platform. I’m good to go on my side.

“British and Commonwealth titles on the line, two young Scottish fighters in great form – it’s a no brainer. Not next year, not down the line, let’s do it now! The fans want it, I want it. Let’s go.”

Regardless of opposition, Dickson would like Farooq to fight again over the summer to claim the belt outright with a third successful defence of his title.

He added: “He was the first Pakistan-born fighter to win the British title and now he can be the first to make three defences to get the belt. He can make history again. That’s a good target.

“If he gets the British title outright then you have to look at where he goes after that. I like the idea of doing it the old-fashioned way by winning the British, Commonwealth and European titles before jumping to world level.

“It’s about building up resilience, momentum and strength to get to that stage. He needs that experience under his belt. But I’m confident he’s got what it takes to go all the way.”
