STEVEN GERRARD will have targeted a bit of silverware at the start of the season, so there is no denying how important the Scottish Cup fifth round replay with Kilmarnock tonight is.

If Rangers could go all the way, they would stop the treble treble for Celtic. But it is important for Steven to make his mark at Ibrox and he knows the club is all about winning.

There has been a progression this season, Rangers have come a long way in the short space of time that Steven and his staff have been in.

But they will want to end the campaign with a bit of silverware to show for their efforts.

If that doesn’t happen, I don’t think that there will be too negative a view on how the manager is portrayed, but he is a winner and he knows that Rangers need to be lifting leagues and cups.

The supporters are desperate for a bit of silverware again and the Scottish Cup is their best chance. But there are some big teams left in the competition and when you get to this stage, fans of all the clubs left are starting to dream of Hampden.

It won’t be easy for Rangers to get through to the quarter-finals and, if they do, they then have a really tricky tie away at Aberdeen.

Steven knows what Kilmarnock are all about and he has to find a way to get more out of them than Rangers have done on the last couple of occasions.

Killie haven’t changed much this season in terms of their approach, because they haven’t had to. Steve Clarke has done a tremendous job there and they will fancy their chances at Ibrox.

Steven has changed the Rangers team quite a lot at times this season, sometimes that has been enforced through suspensions or injuries, and he will be looking at his creative players, the likes of Ryan Kent and Steven Davis, to really have an impact tonight.

There was a lack of cutting edge about Rangers at the weekend as they drew with St Johnstone at Ibrox and the manager clearly wasn’t happy with the performance.

Rangers can’t afford a repeat tonight. The service to the striker has to be a lot better because there weren’t enough chances created and Rangers didn’t do enough to win.

They didn’t move the ball quickly enough and they never really looked like scoring, and the manager made his feelings clear afterwards.

This is a great game to try and bounce back from the performance and the result against St Johnstone. If you win, you can get back on track straight away.

So, from Rangers’ perspective, it is probably a good game for them, even if it is a difficult one. They can go and put the wrongs right.

It is a chance for the players to say ‘right, we didn’t play well, but this is our reaction’. And everyone will be looking at their response.

Of course it won’t be easy because Kilmarnock defend well and they can hit you on the counter-attack with the likes of Jordan Jones, Chris Burke and Eamonn Brophy.

But, at home, it is a tie that Rangers need to be winning and they will still be the favourites to do that and get through.

It has the makings of a really great game. The expectation is on Rangers to go and win it and, as some people see it, salvage their season.

I’m not jumping on that bandwagon, though, and completely writing off the rest of the Premiership campaign.

Steven Gerrard won’t be, either, and he will learn a lot about his players by looking at the way they react at Ibrox tonight.
