Former Scotland under-20s prop George Thornton has joined Glasgow Warriors after agreeing to join them from English Premiership side Wasps.

The 22-year-old who was raised in Leicestershire has signed a two year deal, joining second row Andrew Davidson, who is rejoining his home town club after four years in England with London Scottish and Newcastle Falcons and South African-born back Kyle Steyn who, like Thornton, is dual-qualified and has made a considerable impact with the Warriors over the past month, earning a place in the team which met Saracens in last weekend’s Champions Cup quarter-final.

At 6’3” and 17 stone plus, Thornton effectively replaces Edinburgh recruit Jamie Bhatti in the squad and heads north after two years in the Wasps academy, having made four senior appearances. A member of the team that claimed Scotland’s best-ever fifth-place finish at an Under 20 World Championship in Georgia two year ago, he played regularly alongside soon-to-be Glasgow colleagues Matt Fagerson, Stafford McDowall and Robbie Nairn, as well as Edinburgh quartet Blair Kinghorn, Darcy Graham, Luke Crosbie and Callum Hunter-Hill.

“It’s great for the club and for Scottish Rugby to bring a young, talented Scottish prop back to Scotland,” said Warriors assistant coach Jonny Humphreys.“George has shown great promise in the Wasps Academy and Scotland U20s and will add strength in depth. This club has a history of nurturing young, Scottish front row talent. Zander Fagerson, Jamie Bhatti and D’Arcy Rae have all become internationals whilst playing here. George is coming to an environment where he can really thrive.”
