Dir: Gus Van Sant

With: Matt Damon, Frances McDormand

Runtime: 106 minutes

HOLLYWOOD royalty in the form of Matt Damon (above) and Frances McDormand take up the green cudgels in this environment-themed drama. The pair play representatives of a gas company who descend on small rural town with a big chequebook and even bigger promises of riches to come when the digging starts.

As the town folk ponder whether to accept the deal, divisions appear and loyalties come under strain. With a screenplay by Damon and John Krasinski (the American version of The Office) and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting), Promised Land is more than a tad snoozy and worthy, but the Damon-McDormand sparring just about makes up for it.

Glasgow Film Theatre, June 1, 6.10pm.
