FROM NOW…

FROM NOW…

1. Go For Sisters (GFT, March 2, 1.15pm) I'm a massive John Sayles fan. This is a UK premiere, and it's got all the John Sayles hallmarks. It's beautifully shot and quite tense the whole way through.

2. My Name Is Hmmm… (GFT, February 24, 6pm) It's by the fashion designer agnes b and stars Douglas Gordon; Agnes is definitely coming because she's doing a masterclass on her filmmaking. It's quite a difficult film but it's a very good film, not what you'd expect.

3. Benny & Jolene (Cineworld, March 1, 3.30pm; GFT, March 2, 5.30pm) My fun film. It stars Craig Roberts (below), who was here for Submarine. It's a lovely, warm, teenage film, such a nice view of teenage life. A great British film.

4. Deceptive Practice (GFT, February 23, 1.45pm; February 24, 3pm) Ricky Jay is coming! It's got amazing footage in it which will have you wondering "How did he do that?" He's coming, so he might magic us a fourth screen.

5. Bloody Beans (GFT, February 23, 8.45pm; Cineworld, February 25, 3.30pm) "Winner of the documentary prize at Copenhagen, it's quite harsh, but good. It's about Algerian children exploring their past through the French colonial years."

AND FROM THEN…

1. Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2009) A great music documentary made even better by the band playing live in the cinema - they rocked!

2. The Big Uneasy (2011) A fascinating documentary and topped off by a personal appearance by Harry Shearer, who was the perfect guest.

3. Your Sister's Sister (2012) A great Opening Gala, a quirky, funny, warm film introduced by the lovely Lynn Shelton.

4. The Raid (2012) The pinnacle of that year's FrightFest, with Gareth Evans getting a huge welcome and the star of the film Iko Uwais doing back-flips in GFT1.

5. Much Ado About Nothing (2013) The perfect Closing Gala film, and Joss Whedon was a warm, funny and open guest. The crowd were ecstatic and he was delighted.
