Teenage Anna is a novitiate nun about to take her vows in a Polish convent. First, she must visit her only living relative, who has a series of surprises in store. And together the mismatched pair set out to discover the fate of Ida's parents during the German occupation. Ravishingly shot in black and white, and beautifully performed, Pawel Pawlikowski's film is a fascinating reflection on his country's dark past and an affecting account of a young woman facing an uncommon fork in the road.

David Cronenberg's satire on the Los Angeles celebrity culture is savagely funny and deliciously twisted. Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack and Robert Pattinson star as some very troubled individuals.
The Equalizer (15)
Denzel Washington is a retired government operative-cum-one-man fighting machine, who can't help righting wrongs in the community. The star promises potential, but a violent film becomes desperately routine.

An ambitious amalgam of love story and science-based mystery scores emotionally, but its ideas need a lot more time in the lab.
