Wild Bill (15)
HHHH
Dir: Dexter Fletcher
With: Will Poulter, Charlie Creed-Miles
Running time: 98 minutes
DEXTER Fletcher, graduate of Bugsy Malone, Press Gang and Lock, Stock turns in a best of British directorial debut with this poignant and funny tale of useless fathers and disappointed sons.
Dean (Son of Rambow's Will Poulter) and his brother have been getting by since dad (Charlie Creed-Miles) went to prison and mum walked out. Now dad's back and he can't wait to be off again.
It's a familiar story set in the standard territory of London's end end council estate badlands, but Fletcher's drive and humour, a terrific performance from young Poulter, and a guest spot by Andy Serkis make you first intrigued then gripped as to how this Brit western will turn out. The boys done good.
The Devil Inside (15)
H
Dir: William Brent Bell
With: Fernanda Andrade
Running time: 83 minutes
THAT old black magic tale of possession and exorcism is dug up yet again for this piece of hooey.
Fernanda Andrade plays Isabella, a young woman whose mother once underwent an exorcism with appalling results. Determined to find out the truth, Isabella ventures to Rome with a cameraman in tow, as one does, and finds more questions than answers waiting.
Deploying the by now wearily familiar found footage ruse, William Brent Bell's horror is big on screaming and short on originality and thought. Enough to make your head spin 360 degrees with boredom.
Act of Valour (15)
HH
Dirs: Mike McCoy, Scott Waugh
With: Alex Veadov, Nestor Serrano
Running time: 109 minutes
THE US Navy Seals, pictured, the crew that did for Osama Bin Laden, turn actors in this bizarre mix of action and fiction that's less a movie than a 109-minute salute to the US military.
Directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh combine a story that involves various foreign terrorist types intending to wreak havoc on American soil with near constant action. The action scenes are impressive, but the decision to let the lads in camouflage do some of the acting was a major no-no. As actors these boys make great soldiers. One for the Chris Ryan/Ultimate Force brigade only.
A Man's Story (15)
HH
Dir: Varon Bonicos
Running time: 97 minutes
VARON Bonicos came to film the British fashion designer Ozwald Boateng for six months and stayed 12 years.
The result is a film that's desperately short on irony about the fashion world – Boateng takes himself very seriously indeed – but interesting, in a rubbernecking way, when it comes to the subject's personal life. The pair go through a lot together, from fashion shows to a marriage break-up, with Boateng analysing this and that as he goes along. Mostly dull with a few flourishes.
March 25-29, Glasgow Film Theatre.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
