A Jester's Tale (U)
A black comedy satirising conflict through the medium of a "pseudo-history" of the Thirty Years War, this 1964 film by Czech director Karel Zeman has influenced everyone from Tim Burton to Jan Svankmajer with its mix of live action and animation. Terry Gilliam is another fan: you can catch flavours of it in Monty Python And The Holy Grail and The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen. Released here by Second Sight with restored pictures and sound.
Only Lovers Left Alive (15)
Jim Jarmusch casts Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as vampires and former lovers in a sumptuous film that wowed critics when it showed in competition at Cannes last year. Peopled by undead hipsters and set in Detroit and Tangier, it's like Twilight for grown-ups.
