Snow White & The Huntsman (12A)
HHH
Dir: Rupert Sanders
With: Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron
Running time: 127 minutes
THE second Snow White of the year is a sombre affair that not only takes the Grimm fairytale as inspiration but countless other movies besides.
It looks stunning, boasts great effects and has a memorably wicked queen in Charlize Theron, but is inhibited by cumbersome plotting, one too many lacklustre characters (Kristen Stewart's sullen heroine included) and some curious creative decisions. Why, for instance, does first-time director Rupert Sanders employ such a starry cast of dwarves (Hoskins, McShane, Marsan) and underuse them? And why the dodgy Scottish accent for Chris Hemsworth's Huntsman? That said, the film entertains in spite of its flaws.

Death watch (12A)
HHH
Dir: Bertrand Tavernier
With: Harvey Keitel, Romy Schneider
Running time: 128 minutes
WHILE on the money in predicting Big Brother television culture, Bertrand Tavernier's 1980 drama is perhaps more interesting now in the glimpse it offers of Glasgow 30 years ago. Go down memory lane as Harvey Keitel secretly films Romy Schneider as she struggles to cope with momentous events.
Glasgow Film Theatre and Filmhouse, Edinburgh.
Beloved (15)
HHH
Dir: Christophe Honore
With: Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni
Running time: 135 minutes
FROM its opening song, a French version of These Boots Were Made For Walking, Christophe Honore's musical drama is a kooky little affair. Much meandering as stories of love unfold, but worth catching for Catherine Deneuve and her daughter Chiara Mastroianni on screen together.
DCA, June 1-7; Filmhouse, June 8-14; Glasgow Film Theatre, June 8-10; Eden Court, June 29-July 4.
Top Cat – The Movie 3D (U)
HH
Dir: Alberto Mar
Voices: Ben Diskin, Jason Harris
Running time: 90 minutes
CLOSE friends got to call our titular hero TC, but you can call this movie version of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon overlong, convoluted and lacking in laughs. For nostalgics only.
Tales of the Night 3D (PG)
HHHH

Running time: 84 minutes
ALL ages can lose themselves in Michel Ocelot's gorgeously animated adventure featuring maidens in jeopardy, spell-weaving sorcerers and heroic werewolves.
Filmhouse, June 1-7.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
