The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (R/I) (U)

HHHHH

Dirs: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger

With: Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr

Running time: 156 minutes

THE best of British and the best of humanity come all wrapped up in Powell and Pressburger's 1943 classic, here spruced up and reissued in glorious form by Glasgow's Park Circus.

Roger Livesey, playing the titular soldier, Glasgow's Deborah Kerr, playing three parts in total, and Anton Walbrook's German officer Theo, bring a lump to the throat in this sprawling tale of war and peace, friendship and love. Fiercely principled, stirring, wildly funny and deeply moving, it's a tonic for the troops, for everyone.

Filmhouse, Edinburgh, tomorrow-May 24.

Even the Rain (15)

HHHH

Dir: Iciar Bollain

With: Gael Garcia Bernal, Luis Tosar

Running time: 102 minutes

SCOTTISH writer Paul Laverty, longtime filmmaking partner of Ken Loach, ventures wider with this engrossing drama, winner of the audience award at Berlin last year.

Gael Garcia Bernal and Luis Tosar play the director and producer of a movie, shooting in Bolivia, about Columbus's conquest of the Americas. While they dabble in history by day and live in a luxury hotel by night, the local community fights against the privatisation of its water supply.

The twin tales of exploitation are an obvious fit, and could have made for a film that was more worthy than stirring. But Laverty and director Iciar Bollain keep the focus as much on the personal as the political, resulting in a piece that's both rousing and sharply observed.

Glasgow Film Theatre, tomorrow-May 24; Filmhouse, Edinburgh, tomorrow-May 27.

A Gang Story (15)

HHH

Dir: Oliver Marchal

With: Gerard Lanvin, Patrick Catalifo

Running time: 102 minutes

MESRINE'S Gerard Lanvin cuts up another storm as a Gallic Godfather-type in this slick French thriller.

Momon (Lanvin) is officially retired from the crime game and enjoying the quiet life as a dad and grandfather. Then his childhood pal Serge (Tcheky Karyo) is arrested and needs help.

Like Michael Corleone before him, Momon is pulled back in to a brutal life of crime. Based on a true story, the material is familiar from many another crime drama, but director Oliver Marchal brings it together with elan.

Filmhouse, Edinburgh, tomorrow-May 22.
