Andy M Stewart, the singer and songwriter with legendary Scottish folk band Silly Wizard, has been left paralysed from the chest down following a series of medical problems and failed spinal surgery.
Having lost his business and livelihood, the singer who along with Johnny and Phil Cunningham, Gordon Jones and Martin Hadden took Scottish music to a huge audience in the U.S. during the 1980s now needs to move into wheelchair-friendly accommodation and his sister, Angie, is raising funds to provide daily nursing care and improve the quality of life for a talent whose voice is now all but lost. Last week's production of Shakespeare's King Lear at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was noted on the Herald's review pages for its reinvention of the play by an all-female cast. Mark Saunders' production was, however, mistakenly credited as being performed by BA Acting students, when it fact it was performed by post-graduate students on Classical and Contemporary Text course. Apologies to all concerned for this misunderstanding, and we look forward to the CCT department's forthcoming production of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II, which runs at RCS this week from Tuesday.

Glasgow musician Shona Brown reaches the half-way stage in her 10in10 Project with the release of a three-track EP, entitled Les Nuages, this month. The classically trained flautist, who also uses keyboards and electronic samples as well as her voice to create her own compositions, revisits her classical roots for inspiration from French impressionists including Debussy on this latest recording. Brown's plan with10in10 is to release a new recording on the 10th day of each month over ten months.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.Â
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.Â
That is invaluable.Â
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
