Lyth Arts Centre in Caithness is facing a funding crisis.
One of Scotland's northernmost venues and much valued by touring groups and companies over its thirty-eight years of operations, Lyth is currently waiting to hear the outcome of its application to Creative Scotland and is going ahead with its April programme featuring fiddler Gavin Marwick's Journeyman Spectacular on Thursday, April 16 and emerging Scottish theatre company, Spindrift Project in Forsaken on Tuesday, April 28. Beyond that, the venue's situation is precarious and donations are being invited via its website to enable the programme to continue in the short term. lytharts.org.uk
Three celebrated flamenco artists from prominent Seville flamenco dynasties appear for two nights only in an authentic Andalusian presentation in Edinburgh this month. Dancer Charo Cala, who has toured the world and danced in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Barcelona World Cup and Olympic Games, joins singer Iván Ramos and guitarist Fernando de Maria at Henderson's Café in the Crypt under St John's, Princes Street on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 to perform in an intimate venue similar to the gypsy caves of Granada where flamenco flourished. All three artists will also be taking workshops in flamenco dance and guitar at Heriot's Centre for Sport & Exercise, Lauriston Place on Saturday 25.

Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Alasdair Roberts has organized a short Scottish tour in May for the Irish Traveller singer Thomas McCarthy, who has been hailed as the keeper of the flame of Irish traditional ballad and song. Originally from Birr in County Offaly, McCarthy now lives in West London but regularly returns to Ireland where his family, all of whom sing, have nurtured his interest in and knowledge of traditional songs since he was a child. He recently released his second album, Herself and Myself, and was filmed singing for BBC TV's Call the Midwife series. He appears at Aberdeen Folk Club on May 6, Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh (May 7) and Glad Café, Glasgow (May 8).

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.Â
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.Â
That is invaluable.Â
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
