Northern Streams, Edinburgh's annual celebration of musical and folkloric links between Scotland, the Northern Isles and Scandinavia, goes ahead in the Grassmarket Centre on Friday April 24 and Saturday April 25.

Among those performing are Fjärin, a young trio from Denmark and Sweden, Swedish-Norwegian group Oleman, and Orcadian duo Fiona Driver and Graham Simpson. As well as concerts there are workshops, dance classes and illustrated talks over the two days.

Entry is now open to the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2015. Applications from anyone who is aged 16-25 on April 30, 2015 should be submitted by Friday, April 24. The final of the competition, whose previous winners include pianists Alan Benzie and Peter Johnstone and saxophonists Ru Pattison (pictured) and Joe Wright, will take place on Wednesday, June 24 at the Rio Club in Merchant Square, Glasgow as part of Glasgow Jazz Festival. Jayhawks founder member Mark Olson returns to Glasgow on Wednesday, April 22 to showcase his latest album, Good-bye Lizelle, in a Fallen Angels Club presentation at the CCA in Sauchiehall Street. The album, the country-rock singer-songwriter's first solo project for five years, was written and recorded as Olson toured the world and features his Norwegian wife, Ingunn Ringvold, on vocals. Support comes from local singer Monica Queen, who has collaborated with Belle & Sebastian, James Grant and Florida-based songwriter and producer, Jim White.www.fallenangelsclub.com

Glasgow-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Shona Brown has released the sixth instalment of her 10in10 project, a self-penned ambient instrumental called All I Have. A classically trained flautist who has branched out into electronic sampling and looping and had a successful run on the Edinburgh Fringe last year, Brown is on schedule to issue a new recording on the tenth of each month for ten months.
