Blues competition call

Calling all blues musicians. Entries for this year's New Brunswick Battle of the Blues open on October 1. This UK-wide competition, which offers the winner the opportunity to play on the main stage at the prestigious Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in New Brunswick, Canada, next September, is organising a Scottish heat to take place at the Blues and Beyond Club in Cupar, Fife, in February. Blues bands and solo singer-songwriters, who must be unsigned at the time of registering, can enter between October 1 and November 30 at www.tourismnewbrunswick.co.uk.

Think outside the Xbox

A new exhibition opening next week in Dundee will give visitors the chance to build their own version of the city's waterfront area. The exhibition, titled Imagination Will Take You Everywhere, opens at the Hannah Maclure Centre in the University of Abertay on September 14. The show will feature Xbox games consoles for visitors to use to create their own digital version of Dundee.

Russia in focus

The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh will host the the AniMotion show featuring Evelyn Glennie and Maria Rud on October 11. This collaboration between the Scottish percussionist and Russian visual artist seeks to reflect the creative spirit of Catherine the Great's court and explore the link between art and music in Russian culture.
