SCOTTISH band Franz Ferdinand and indie-folk musicians James Yorkston and The Pictish Trail will join a starry line-up at the Barbican in London on July 4 for the Beck: Song Reader Live concert.

American singer Beck Hansen released his latest album, Song Reader, as 20 songs (including two instrumentals) existing only as a book of sheet music that has not been recorded. Thus the album only comes to life when performed live.

Also on the Barbican bill will be Beck himself, Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, French actress-singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, Joan As Policewoman, Michael Kiwanuka, Beth Orton, Villagers frontman Conor J O'Brien, The Staves, The Guillemots and a house band which features Aberdeen-born jazz drummer Seb Rochford.

PRINCIPAL photography began yesterday on the Isle of Mull for feature film The Silent Storm, which casts Emmy-winning actor Damian Lewis, pictured, opposite Bafta-nominated actress Andrea Riseborough. The Homeland star plays a stern minister whose outsider wife (Riseborough) has her life turned upside down when a 17-year-old delinquent (played by newcomer Ross Anderson) is sent to live with them as part of a rehabilitation scheme. The film is written and directed by Corinna Villari-McFarlane, and also stars John Sessions and Kate Dickie.

LOS ANGELES-based experimental musicians Lucky Dragons will play an exclusive one-off Scottish gig at Dundee Contemporary Arts on July 1. Known for their audience-interactive approach to electronic music, using projections and computer-generated voice patterns as key elements, the duo's work sits somewhere between art installation and live performance. Support comes from Dundee artist Erstlaud and Glasgow-based artist Torsten Lauschmann, who had a major solo exhibition at DCA in 2011. Tickets cost £8/£6 and are available from 01382 909900 or at the DCA box office.
