Hydro bosses have confirmed that the venue will go meat-free for Morrissey's show in March.

The former Smiths frontman, who is an avid animal rights campaigner, recently pulled out of a performance in Iceland because the venue he was playing refused to sell only vegetarian food on the night of his show.

The Hydro now intends to go meat-free for Morrissey's show and may even create a veggie burger in his honour.

A spokesperson said: "No meat, chicken or fish will be sold anywhere in the venue on the day of Morrissey's show.

"Our catering partners are currently looking at alternatives that can be sold which will honour Morrissey."

Morrissey blamed the cancellation of his show at the Harpa concert hall in Iceland on "the refusal of management to sell only vegetarian food on the night".

In a statement on the fan site True To You, which he uses to post official messages, he said: "I love Iceland and I have waited a long time to return, but I shall leave the Harpa concert hall to their cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust."

It is not the first time a gig has been cancelled when it conflicted with his vegetarian beliefs - in 2009 he left the stage at California's Coachella Festival after complaining about the smell of burgers, telling the crowd he could smell "burning flesh".

Morrissey will perform at the SSE Hydro on March 21.
