Rhiannon Giddens, Tomorrow Is My Turn (Nonesuch)

We are only just into February and already Nonesuch, fresh from its jubilee year, has other labels choking on its dust. Each week seems to bring another fine release, and here is one that is certain to be high in many a chart of 2015 come the end of the year. Giddens will be known to fans of Celtic Connections for her role in the Caroline Chocolate Drops and she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett-curated Another Day Another Time concert in New York Town Hall - the live recording of which came out (on Nonesuch) at the start of the year - with her version of Odetta's Waterboy. It is present on this, her Burnett-produced solo debut, a coming together of talents that is another pinnacle in his stellar career. In a collection of unmissable political directness, Giddens also revisits the work of Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, and the rockabilly gospel of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, as well as her own moving take on the title track, a Charles Aznavour song to which Nina Simone added her own inimitable layer of meaning. With a supporting cast including players from the Chocolate Drops and (labelmates) Punch Brothers, it is her remarkable singing that rules the mix: her passion is teamed with a musical knowledge to match that of Burnett in a collection that is remarkable overview of American music that manages just fine without Elvis, Dylan and Bruce.
