Chart star Emeli Sande has told how it has been affirming as a songwriter to hear her compositions being used by contestants on The X Factor.

Tracks such as Clown are among the tunes which have been chosen by hopefuls on the ITV programme as they show off their vocal prowess.

Speaking as she launched a new music studio for the community in Tottenham, north London, Sande told how it gave her a "great feeling" to see her songs used that way.

"It feels pretty cool - X Factor is a show that's watched by a lot of people and the types of songs they pick on there are ones which everyone knows and sings," she said.

"So to have a song which a lot of people have connected to and choose to sing at an audition, I like that. It is a great feeling for a songwriter."

The new rehearsal space has been opened for 11 to 24-year-olds and is the 15th such project to open in a national network developed by UK Music, the trade body for the whole of the music industry.

It includes a pair of rehearsal rooms and recording studio which is free for people in the area, in a partnership with the Beggars Group music company as well as Haringey Council and Homes for Haringey.

Sande said: "I think it's a fantastic rehearsal space and I think it's going to be a brilliant benefit to the community. I think when I was growing up and learning to write and learning about the industry, something like this would have been invaluable to me."
