Marny Godden talks about her new show, Where's John's porridge Bowl?

1 Tell us about your Fringe show

It’s called Where’s Johns Porridge Bowl? and it’s basically me dressing up as some very silly playful characters for 50 minutes. There’s a doggy who thinks he’s a cat, a toothless twit called One Tooth, a bent copper and a couple of my all time favorites. It’s joyous and lots of fun.

2 Best thing about the Fringe?

The smell of the hops in the air, I love that. I’m uses to London grime. Much greener and nicer here in Edinburgh. Also getting to hang out with loads of legends performing and working around the Fringe. That’s pretty cool.

3 Worst thing about the Fringe?

The days when your audience stare at you blankly and you feel like tossing in the flannel.

4 How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?

This is my eighth year! Bloody hell.

5 Favourite Fringe venue?

The Hive, Bob’s Blundabus and the Dragon Fly: all venues of Heroes of the Fringe and all packed full of the best talent and the kindest staff you can imagine.

6 Best Fringe memory?

A standing ovation for The Grandees (my comedy troupe) in 2013 for a show we wrote called ‘The Wrong Side Of The Door’ – I’ve never felt so much electricity before. It was amazing.

7 Best heckle?

When I said, ‘I’ll be back’ and a lady shouted ‘Don’t bother love’!

8 Craziest on stage experience?

One of my characters does a sexy dance with an audience member and the guy took off his top, removed his belt, put it around his own neck and offered it to me!

9 What’s on your rider?

Lots of water, a nice salad and lovely kind folk around me.

10 How do you wind down after a show?

I like to go somewhere quiet and boring, like my bedroom and just potter about on my own.

11 What do you love about Scotland?

The people are fantastic, I love the scenery, the smell of hops, the green, walking everywhere and feeling like I’m in a really cool place.

12 What do you like about Edinburgh?

The buildings are really cool. Tall and spacious with high ceilings. I love the meadows so much - the grass is so green. Edinburgh skies are spectacular; I love the colours and how it’s always changing and always so beautiful.

13 What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

I ate a fried Mars bar once. They say that’s Scottish. I loved it.

14 What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?

So far they seem to be warming most to when I get audiences up to play musical statues - they jump on board with the game big time and there’s lots of laughs.

15 Favourite joke?

My favorite ice cream is Neapolitan. Its my absolute favorite. Get rid of the strawberry and the vanilla though, I’ll just have the chocolate.

16 Favourite Scottish food/drink?

Battered Mars bar.

Marny Godden's Where's John's porridge Bowl? is on at Heroes at The Hive (venue 313) until August 28 (except 15th).
