Archie Maddocks performs ‘Matchstick’ at Just The Tonic (The Mash House) during August (except 13th).

  • What is your Fringe show about?

It’s about me not knowing what I think about stuff anymore, the problems in the world, breastfeeding etiquette and the worst thing I have ever witnessed.

  • How many times/many years have you appeared at the Fringe?

Been there for the last five years. This is my third solo show. Before my first solo show, I did what’s called in the industry a ‘cowards hour’ and before that I did The Big Value show.

  • What’s the worst thing about the Fringe?

The panic that no-one will come. Or that no-one will laugh. Or that people will laugh for the wrong reasons. Or that I’ll get attacked by one of your freakishly big seagulls. Or that Arthur’s Seat isn’t actually dormant and explodes. So, I guess the answer is perpetual fear and anxiety.

  • If you were not a performer what would you be doing?

I’d probably be much happier.

  • How do you prepare for a performance?

I try and remind myself that I am professionally funny and that there’s nothing to worry about. Then that all goes out the window and I just try and concentrate on walking properly.

It’s kind of like being in school. You see everyone you know, pretty much everyday, and you don’t feel guilty for spending more time drunk than sober.

  • What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve ever done?

Hated England.

  • Favourite Scottish food/drink?

Chips and sauce. What is sauce? Whatever it is, it makes my lip sweat taste much more hearty.
