Tez Ilyas talks about his new stand up show Made In Britain.

Tell us about your Fringe show

Made in Britain is a show about the person I am today and how I became that guy and also about how I as an ‘ethnically challenged’ person fit into modern Britain.

Best thing about the Fringe?

Watching people who are worse than me.

Worst thing about the Fringe?

Watching people who are better than me.

How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?

Five.

Favourite Fringe venue?

The Pleasance Courtyard easy peasy.

Best Fringe memory?

I was sharing a flat with John Hastings, Jack Barry and Tom Toal in 2013. I got out of the shower with a towel wrapped around me and Jack Barry was standing in the hallway with his girlfriend who’d just arrived, I said hello and shook her hand and as I did so, John came flying past and whipped my towel off, so I was standing in the hallway naked shaking Jack Barry’s girlfriend’s hand who I’d just met. Fun times.

Best heckle?

Some once shouted ‘bacon’ at me in the middle of my set. I’m not really sure what she expected to happen though. Like bacon isn’t Muslim kryptonite. I didn’t melt. Idiot.

Craziest on stage experience?

I once won a dance-off at Glastonbury and as a prize I got to watch Manu Chao from the side of the Pyramid Stage. That was pretty crazy.

What’s on your rider?

Peanut butter M&Ms.

How do you wind down after a show?

I like eating. It’s a thing I’m doing on the regs. It’s good.

What do you love about Scotland?

The water. It tastes great and it leaves my hair feeling super soft after a shower. Yum.

What do you like about Edinburgh?

The Fringe Festival and the weather.

What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

My girlfriend.

What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?

Funny ones.

Favourite Scottish food/drink?

I don’t drink alcohol, on the account of not being an infidel, but I heart Irn-Bru! Also your fish and chips are lush.
