Sophie Willan on her debut show, On Record.

Tell us about your Fringe show

When I was 23 I received all my personal files from social services. This show explores who I am and my world view through those files. It’s a raucous, wild show I suppose.

How does it feel to be playing the Fringe for the first time?

To be doing my first ever stand up hour is amazing! I’m so excited!

Best live act seen at Fringe?

Hard to say, I’ve seen so many great shows over the years. I really enjoyed watching Nick Helm and Tim Key – both pretty wild and out there.

Best thing about the Fringe?

You get to meet loads of exciting new people – make friends, see so many shows - it’s just so exciting.

Worst thing about the Fringe?

It can be exhausting – I think you really have to keep yourself fit and healthy or you'd just burn out. Also, no taxi anywhere at 5am!

If you were not a performer/comedian what would you be doing?

I have no idea – writing and performing is all I’ve ever wanted to be. I left school with no qualifications and a chip on my shoulder so I’d probably have become a petty criminal or something!

How do you combat pre-gig nerves?

Little mantras, deep breathing etc.

Worst on stage experience?

I did a gig at a festival a few years ago with my best mate, Lydia. I had to dress up as a garden gnome and she was dressed as an Avon Lady. We performed to seven confused strangers gurning in a yurt! One audience member tried to pick me up so Lydia rugby tackled him to the ground.

How do you recover from a hefty heckle? Do you have a set of stock replies?

Just a quick put down and move on really. One of my lines is ‘Aaw that’s lovely but we don’t want your life story.’.

What do you love about Scotland?

I love the people in Scotland – I’m from Bolton so of course I do - they’re even more northern than me!

What do you like about Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a beautiful city. I love the hilliness, the gorgeous buildings, the fact that it’s small enough for you to walk home pissed to most places.

What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

Walk up Arthurs Seat.

Who’s your favourite Scottish comedian?

There’s so many great Scottish Comedians but my top two are Susan Calman and Kevin Bridges.

Favourite joke?

Spike Milligan’s Tomb Stone that says ‘I told you I was ill’.

Favourite Scottish food/drink?

Square sausages – genius!
