Elliot Steel talks about his new show, Netflix ‘n’ Steel.
Tell us about your Fringe show
My Fringe show is about how I feel very lost within my own generation. I look at someone like my granddad who thought in the second World War and then look at my generation and think we couldn’t do that. Imagine my generation being asked to do that we’d probably just start a petition and tell Hitler he can’t come into our safe space.
Doing my first hour is really exciting seeing as I have no qualifications and never made it through college. For people to be backing my show feels really cool. It’s like a massive middle finger to all the teachers who never told me I’d never amount to anything.
Best thing about the Fringe?
There’s so many. Every year I go see Kai Humphries as I think he’s one of the best comedians to watch always a solid funny hour. But can’t wait for Milo Mccabe it’s character comedy and he always nails it. Also super excited for Jamali Maddix and Tom Houghton who are doing debuts this year.
If you were not a performer/comedian what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t a comedian I’d probably just be sat around playing FiFa all day which is kind of tmy dream job but need to find someone who would pay me to do this.
How do you combat pre-gig nerves?
Pre gig nerves are part of the fun I find. It’s like a rollercoaster where it’s just one big bag of nerves and then loads of fun. I think nerves are good it shows myself that I care.
Worst on stage experience?
I talk about this in more depth in my show but I’m pretty sure Jihadi John once heckled me and threatened to beat me up.
How do you recover from a hefty heckle?
Depends how bad the heckle is. Usually just laugh and realise how mad my job is and try to get people more involved rather than try to embarrass them.
What do you love about Scotland?
The people. Through doing the Fringe some of the best people I’ve met are scottish I find them fun to hang out with and there always up for a laugh.
What do you like about Edinburgh?
The fact that nothing is far means being hungover is far easier to deal with.
What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?
My Sunday league team didn’t qualify for a football tournament once either.
Who’s your favourite Scottish comedian?
Kevin Bridges he’s probably my all time favourite to be honest but obviously Frankie Boyle as well. Glasgow has produced three of the best comics ever in my opinion. Third is obviously Billy Connolly.
Favourite joke?
Man walks into a bar says “ow”. So simple.
Favourite Scottish food/drink?
Deep fried mars bar and Irn Bru. Anywhere else in the world that’s illegal but in Scotland it’s practically a vegetable.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
