On this showing, Kate Y A Bone (1896-1985) was obviously a woman of charm.

Her poem originally appeared in Thistle By-Blaws (Castlelaw Press, 1971) and is included in The Edinburgh Book of Twentieth-Century Scottish Poetry (EUP, 2005).

CORNERS

I am a constant corner sitter, I

Like the right-angled privacy of nooks

Where trusted friends immortalise themselves

In books beside me on my corner shelves.

A book, a cigarette, a drink, a cat,

What corner could be better than all that?

I am a further corner sitter, I

Like the delight of sitting in the sun.

Here there are blackbirds, pausing in their search,

A mist of greenness climbs upon the larch.

A flower, a bird, the humming of a bee,

These make a sheltered sanctuary for me.

I am a constant corner sitter, I

Like the right-angled privacy of nooks.
