THIS quietly impressive reflection on loss comes from Over the Moon, the latest collection from Imtiaz Dharker, who was born in Pakistan and grew up in a Lahori household in Glasgow (Bloodaxe Books, £12).

She was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, 2014.

THE OTHER SIDE OF SILENCE

The roar of your leaving dies away

and this is when I hear

the sound a blue eggshell makes

when it falls on grass

or the small splutter

of rain shaken off an umbrella

or the sigh that escapes

The shirt thrown on the floor,

the surprised breath

of all things left behind,

not a protest,

just that sense of being

unclasped.
