MORRISON Construction has secured a contract to build two temporary coach terminals for The 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in addition to being the preferred partner for any additional construction works.
The Scottish firm's parent Galliford Try, the housebuilding and construction group, has signed an agreement with Ryder Cup Europe to be the official construction services supplier to next year's event.
Morrison is one of Scotland's biggest contractors, with a strong position in public sector infrastructure and employing 1150 in Scotland last year. Its countrywide portfolio includes the largest project in Scotland for 30 years, the Queensferry Crossing.
Ken Gillespie, the group's construction division chief executive, said: "We are proud to play our part in staging The 2014 Ryder Cup, which is about much more than a sporting spectacle for Scotland. It is already creating a real legacy through business opportunities for Scottish companies and their supply chains and improvements to local infrastructure."
Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup match director, said: "The coach terminals being constructed by the firm are key to the successful delivery of thousands of spectators to and from Gleneagles and we are very pleased that, as well as being built to the highest specifications, there is also a high priority being placed on environmental issues while delivering the project."
Ryder Cup Europe has a commitment to a sustainable procurement code, which seeks to maximise the use of renewable energy, deliver zero waste to landfill, and minimise water consumption through reuse and recycling at tournaments. It says the innovative design brief for the two coach terminals has saved 88 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Six weeks ago NVT, the independent Lanarkshire-based IT services group, revealed it had landed the contract as official supplier and technology services integrator to the Ryder Cup, providing the infrastructure to underpin internet access, scoreboards, catering and other services needed by the event, its other supplier partners, and 250,000 visitors.
Ryder Cup Europe also unveiled Hamilton-based Portakabin Events and Glasgow's SecuriGroup as further suppliers.
