Morrison Construction has won a £56million contract from Hub North Scotland for a new high school project in Shetland.

The group, part of quoted builder Galliford Try, is one of five construction companies on the ‘tier 1’ list of contractors for regional infrastructure funded through the Scottish Futures Trust.

Morrison will carry out the construction of a new four-storey high school for up to 1180 pupils, a three-storey 100-bed residential block, and associated infrastructure works.

The new Anderson High School, which is a like for like replacement for the current school at Clickimin in Lerwick, will cost £42m, and new halls of residence £13.7m.

Two thirds of the funding will come from the Scottish Government, through the SFT.

Galliford Try Investments will invest £1.7m in equity funding for the project.

Additional works at Clickimin Leisure Centre will cost around £3m and be principally funded by Shetland Isles Council.

Greg Fitzgerald, Galliford’s executive chairman, said: “This latest contract complements our growing portfolio of construction projects for the education sector and through working closely with all stakeholders, we will deliver a building with first-class facilities which will greatly benefit the local community and enhance the facilities for education in the region.”

Last month Galliford said it was delighted with the performance of the Miller Construction business it bought a year ago, as it predicted profits at the upper end of market expectations.

In May it was chosen to build four primary schools for Moray Council in a deal worth up to £17m.

It is a member of the consortium building the £750m Aberdeen bypass, and has also been appointed to build a £48m community school in Wick.
