LANARKSHIRE councils aim to attract more business visitors to the area after research found the number of beds available in hotels and the like has increased significantly in recent years. A study commissioned jointly by North and South Lanarkshire councils found there are around 8,000 bedspaces in the area covered by the authorities, up from 7,100 in 1999, the last time a similar study was completed. The total number of bedrooms available across Lanarkshire has jumped to 3,069, from 532 in 1999. Mark Calpin, chairman of the Lanarkshire Area Tourism Partnership, said the area had proved itself as an events destination by hosting world class events, such as the rowing and triathlon events at Strathclyde Country Park as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He added: "We want to capitalise on this and welcome more events as well as meetings and conferences to the area in the future." Accommodation providers include branded hotels such as Hilton Strathclyde in Bellshill, independents including New Lanark Mill and a range of guest houses and Bed and Breakfasts.
