Britain's banking sector has fallen behind those in countries including France, Brazil and Russia after a plunge in annual profits since the financial crisis.

UK lenders fell to 10th in the Top 1000 World Banks ranking compiled by Banker magazine from second place in 2008. HSBC was the only British lender in the latest ranking of top 10 banks.

Combined profits of British banks fell to $19.6 billion (£12.9bn) in the latest period from $85.2bn five years ago, according to The Banker.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China secured pole position with annual profits of $49.1bn in 2012.

Last year's winner, Bank of America, fell to third while JP Morgan Chase & Co remained in second place.
