CONSTRUCTION giant Galliford Try has been chosen to build four primary schools for Moray Council, subject to contract, in a deal worth up to £17 million writes Mark Williamson.

The Middlesex-based company said the package includes projects at Applegrove in Forres, Millbank in Buckie, Seafield in Elgin and St Gerardines in Lossiemouth.

Galliford Try has noted the strength of the construction market in Scotland in recent results announcements, highlighting the support the Scottish Government has provided through investing in public sector building projects.

The company belongs to a consortium that is building the £750m Aberdeen bypass.

It has been appointed to build a £48m community school in Wick.

In February the head of Galliford Try's construction business, Ken Gilliespie, said the division expected to increase turnover in Scotland by 40 per cent amid strong market conditions helped by the acquisition of Miller Construction.

The company said yesterday it had finalised contracts on a £38m programme covering school and college buildings in Hull and Yorkshire.

Executive chairman Greg Fitzgerald said: "Education remains a cornerstone for our Building business across the UK.
