A Scottish international clay pigeon shooter and his fiancée have invested £275,000 to improve their rural tourism business and attract more visitors.

John Macdonald and Emma Dixon took over management of the Mingarry Park Guest House, formerly known as The Clanranald, last year.

They have now completed an overhaul with the original 200-year-old building on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula converted to a guest house, self-catering accommodation and bar.

Mr Macdonald, who represented Scotland at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, is also a self-employed venison dealer and deer stalker.

He plans to try to develop that part of the business and offer clay shooting and fishing packages while Ms Dixon runs the day-to-day operations of the guest house.

There is also a herd of tame red deer on the grounds which guests can get close to.

Mr Macdonald said: "Since taking over the hotel, we've aimed to improve it for visitors at every opportunity.

"The new refurbishment will not only improve the experience for our guests but help us cater for a larger number of visitors."

Highlands and Islands Enterprise provided funding of £74,800 towards the refurbishment. Elaine Jones, development manager at HIE, said: "John and Emma have shown a significant commitment in developing a business in a fragile economic area. The guest house is now able to attract a wider range of visitors since it has been significantly upgraded and will support diversification and further growth of the business sector in Ardnamurchan."
