INDEPENDENT newspaper and magazine delivery business Porteus is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a limited company with an increase in customers.

The Glasgow firm can trace its roots back to 1863 and was once also known as a seller of maps in the early part of the 20th century. However it only became a limited company in 1965.

Porteus has recently acquired part of Business Link (Axis) which will see it increase distribution in Glasgow.

Current Porteus owner Mike Martin, who bought the company in 2004, said it had been a good opportunity to boost client numbers to more than 300.

Mr Martin, an accountant, said the move would provide more security for the business in the coming years.

Porteus, which employs seven staff, delivers mainly to business customers in the G1, G2 and G3 post codes. As part of the recent acquisition it will be delivering copies of The Herald to its customer base.
