ROYAL Bank of Scotland (RBS) has appointed Marcelino Castrillo as its managing director of business banking, writes Scott Wright.

Mr Castrillo was formerly managing director of SME Banking at Santander, having previously held other senior roles at the Spanish bank.

At RBS he will report to Les Matheson, chief executive of personal and business banking.

Mr Matheson said: 'I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Marcelino Castrillo, he will be a great addition to my executive team and his experience makes him the ideal person to help us continue the progress we're making to achieve our ambitions. We are the biggest lender to UK SMEs but we want to be the best and Marcelino will play a key role in helping us to reach that goal."

Mr Castrillo will take over from Abe Tilling, who has been the interim managing director since Ian Walters left in December.
