FIVE Scottish companies have made the short-list in the fifth annual UK Private Business Awards, run by accountancy firm PwC.

Glencraft (Aberdeen), BenRiach Distillery Company, Peak Scientific Holdings and BrewDog are all in the running, alongside Mike Wilson of Ecosse Subsea Systems, nominated in the emerging entrepreneur category.

PwC partner Brian Henderson said: "The shortlist epitomises the very best of British business. From feisty grassroots challenges to mid-tier innovators, these businesses have forged opportunities for themselves and those they employ. They are the engine of the economy."

The winners will be announced at a dinner in London on September 30.
