SCOTTISH Water International (SWI) has seen its turnover rise from £1.2 million to more than £2m in its most recent financial year.

The subsidiary of Scottish Water, which was only set up in 2012, provides consultancy to governments and utilities overseas.

During the 12 months to March 31 this year SWI was involved in a major project to look at improving water services in Calgary, Canada.

As part of a year-long review the Scottish team identified around £2.7m of annual savings that city's Water Services unit could make.

SWI also announced it has secured a deal to provide advice to SA Water which is based in Adelaide, Australia.

That will see it link up with construction firm KPR to look at ways of managing assets.

SWI is also working in Doha as part of a five-year drainage improvement programme in Qatar.

Nigel Ayton, managing director of Scottish Water International, said: "An increasing number of international clients are looking to Scottish Water's experience of transforming the delivery of water services - by raising standards and reducing costs - for the benefit of customers here in Scotland.

"Last year we exported more than £2 million of our services to international clients, showing that the people of Scotland own a globally-recognised company in Scottish Water."

Major industry gathering the World Water Congress starts in Edinburgh today.
