UTILITY Partnership (UP), which provides end-to-end utility infrastructure, smart metering and energy management services, has signed two contracts with customers of its parent company Smart Metering Systems (SMS), writes Emma Newlands.

Glasgow-based SMS acquired Welsh business UP in April in an ambitious £14 million deal that enabled the buyer to operate in electricity as well as gas services, and it said the two contracts "provide continuing validation of the highly-complementary nature" of the two businesses.

The deals are with Opus Energy and DONG Energy Sales, with the former concerning an initial order for about 10,000 meters, which could rise to about 30,000 over three years.

Regarding the contract with DONG Energy, that is a non-exclusive framework agreement to provide a full range of metering and data services to the energy firm's industrial and commercial (I&C) electricity customers.

According to the regulatory filing, the contracts are on similar terms to previous gas metering and data contracts "entered into between SMS and each of Opus and DONG Energy in respect of their I&C customers".

SMS chief executive Alan Foy said the company is now starting to see the benefits of the UP acquisition for its existing customers.

"As a dual gas and electricity service provider, we believe we are well-positioned to enhance our existing respective client relationships and, through UP's energy management and advisory services, to further differentiate SMS to its customers whilst delivering its core meter ownership and data services activities."
