Calnex, the Linlithgow-based mobile network testing specialist, is targeting accelerated global growth having acquired a new product from a rival company.

The new Sentinal all-in-one field testing technology will facilitate and streamline Calnex Solutions's 3G and 4G network testing operation, reducing the amount of kit that operatives will be required to bring to field operations.

It was acquired from US firm Spectracom for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, and it will grow Calnex's "addressable market" by up to 20%.

Calnex chief executive Tommy Cook said: "Market growth is very important to us and we are looking at growing operations in the US, in China and in India. The market segments in our industry are growing. What we are trying to do is to get additional addressable markets, by acquiring new technology and rolling it out into the field. It makes sense to track the developments in the industry and establish brand.

"This means we are covering everything in the field from soup to nuts, and doesn't let competitors sneak in from a side angle, and thus grows our market potential."

Calnex is expecting to achieve up to £6 million in turnover in the financial year 2013-14, up from last year's £4m.

Cook said the company was looking for further acquisitions after the successful purchase.

"It's been a big step for us, we learned a lot, and we definitely are looking for more. Telecoms took a hiding in early 2000s but the industry is now in pretty good shape, the global economic situation is picking up … There is lots of investigation into new technology, people are testing new products driven by the consumer and 4G smartphones."

A recent report for the telecommunications industry analyst Frost & Sullivan suggested the telecommunication ethernet test market is currently worth $900 million (about £550m), with a growth rate of around 8% annually. Within this market, segments such as the installation and maintenance market for the next generation mobile technology are growing at 25%-30% per year.
