WOLFSON has signed a multi-year agreement to provide audio components to Samsung's range of smartphones and tablets.

Shares in Edinburgh-based Wolfson soared more than 5% to 179p. It is understood the agreement will run for more than three years.

While the companies have a close working relationship, this further formalises the partnership at a time when Samsung's Galaxy products have become a leading player in the consumer electronics market and a challenger to the likes of Apple.

Mike Hickey, Wolfson chief executive, said: "This agreement is a testament to our strong [intellectual property] portfolio and our growing partnership, and we very much look forward to working closely together to deliver exceptional audio in Samsung's smartphones and tablets."
