AN Ayrshire-based hardware retailer has opened its eighth store in a move that signals the start of a nationwide expansion phase.

Family-owned Wrights Hardware has launched its latest and most northerly store in Forres after securing a £200,000 loan facility from Bank of Scotland.

The 9200 square foot outlet, based in the former Mackenzie and Cruickshank hardware store, could be the first of several new openings as founders Jim and Celia Ferguson look to expand alongside son and fellow director Brian.

The business employs 70 staff in family-owned stores around the west of Scotland and supplies a further 65 on a franchise basis, including outlets on Uist and in England.

Those stores mostly operate under the Home Hardware banner, though the Ferguson family also trade as Crocket the Ironmonger.

The company was established as a co-operative in Ardrossan in 1983 and its franchise business is still run on those lines.

Jim Ferguson said: "Many people have asked me how we are managing to buck the general downward trend on the high street and I believe it is fairly simple. We are a traditional, old-fashioned business that provides good advice and dedication.

"Many customers in our Ayrshire stores have been with us since day one, a reflection of our first-class commitment to customer service."

Bank of Scotland relationship director Evelyn McNair added: "Jim, Celia and Brian's business is clear evidence it is not all bad news on the high streets. This family firm has witnessed extraordinary growth."
