Market round-up

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 13 prime heifers at Ayr yesterday to a top of £1367.30 per head and 231p per kg to average £1228.92 and 215p, while a couple of prime bullocks fetched £1285.20 or 189p for a Galloway and £1231.20 or 228p for a Limousin.

In the rough ring 65 beef cows averaged 110.5p and 142 dairy cows levelled at 86.8p. Six bulls averaged 110.2p.

There were only 3 poor quality dairy cattle forward that sold to £900 for a freshly-calved B&W heifer.

Wallets Marts sold 1253 prime hoggs in Castle Douglas yesterday to a top of £90 per head and 200p per kg to average 172.3p (-7.7p on the week).

There were also 454 cast sheep forward that sold at similar rates to last week with ewes selling to £125 for a Texel and £53.50 for Blackfaces.

C&D Auction Marts had 3243 store hoggs and feeding and in-lamb ewes forward in Longtown yesterday. Top prices and averages for selected breeds of store hoggs: Suffolks to £74 and averaged £65.56; Texels £74 and £62.05; Greyface £66 and £56.56; Hill Cheviots £60 and £49.84; Blackfaces £57 and £47.07.
